your communications Co-pilot

Hi, I’m David, and I believe in the power of visionary entrepreneurs and problem solvers to make this crazy ole world a nicer place to hang out.

David Kirshbaum

Words For A Better World

To make a big impact, ideas and skills are not enough—you need to connect with people’s emotions and imagination so they take action.

You need great marketing.

It’s an exponential force that makes the difference between working on your big ideas alone…

…and having hundreds, thousands, or millions of other people adding their energy.

You know your stuff.

Your knowledge and insight can fix all the broken things, and when you’re in your genius zone doing your work, you get incredible results.

But as someone who’s busy running an organization or solving big problems, you don’t always have time to stop and write about it.

And if you do manage to carve out 20 minutes to put pen to paper or fingers to keyboard…it’s just…all wrong.

Boring.

Disjointed.

Clunky.

You know the ideas are in there, and they’re soooo good!

If only there were a way to print verbal gold straight from your brain…

That’s where I come in.

Just your friendly, neighborhood wordsmith here, trying to make the world a little brighter.

I help high-achieving do-gooders organize, communicate, and promote their awesome ideas for saving us from ourselves positive change.

How did I get into this line of work? ‘Tis an epic tale, full of (mis)adventures in small business, endless hours of meditation, and enough raw vegan smoothies to fill an Olympic swimming pool.

But I’ll keep it brief.

It’s Ms. Quaite’s fault.

She was my 11th grade English teacher—a gentle presence and the high-pitched voice of a forest pixie, but she drilled us hard on essay writing.

I loved forming thesis statements and backing them up in clever ways. I knew instantly I wanted to be a writer forever and ever; the end.

No wait, that’s not what happened.

I did enjoy writing for fun as well as classwork (I was also involved in the writers’ club and school newspaper), but I didn’t think of it as something I could or would do professionally.

Over some years in various small businesses (restaurant, construction, health coaching, e-commerce), I realized that success isn’t just about how good you are. If no one knows it, your impact is minimal at best.

As I learned more about marketing, I discovered the essential skill of copywriting, which harnesses emotional connection to spark change.

I became fascinated and finally saw the huge potential of writing in my life and work.

A lot of people use copywriting just to sell stuff.

I think it can do so much more.

Ideas steer the world, for better or worse, and it’s up to us to use the power of words to create a truly positive influence and turn the wheel toward “better.”

Why do I care? It is, I suppose, in my nature.

When I was six I wrote a letter to the editor of my local newspaper calling for an end to whaling and over-fishing “before all the animals die.”

In college I spent a summer living with a family in a small village in Ecuador, working with the community on health and sustainability practices.

I’ve watched homelessness rise (and written about it), wealth inequality grow, and climate change ravage places I love.

I’ve marched. I’ve rallied. I’ve planted trees and gardens.

I’ve signed more petitions than I could count. I’ve spent thousands of hours in meditation, yoga, and qigong practice to cultivate inner peace and positive energy.

My purpose is to bring about more balance and harmony in the world, and as a writer, I’ve been privileged to help a variety of ethical innovators and problem solvers dial in their message.

I hate seeing great companies and organizations miss opportunities to engage people, gain customers and allies, and make a bigger impact.

The key is lining up your message with your mission, and making people feel part of something and empowered to make a difference.

Show how you’re contributing to a more just, healthy, and sustainable world.

That’s why I help you tell your story in a way that sparks excitement about your brand.

So if you have a vision not only for financial profit but also positive impact for people and the planet, we should chat over some green tea and gluten-free muffins.

“I was extremely pleased with the work David did but also with the outcome that was achieved, as my readers came back to me with great comments on my paper. It was easy and a pleasure working with David, and I look forward to working together on my next piece.”

Strategic Board Advisor, Angel Investor, VINYA Intelligence, Inc

I needed a very specific set of skills, including storytelling, an understanding of marketing strategy, and an ability to reproduce voice faithfully. I had just about given up and decided to write everything myself.

Working with David was a much-needed breath of fresh air. I could just give him the brief, and trust him to return a well-written draft, on time and on target. It was really quite lovely. I absolutely endorse working with him.”

Random Points of Interest in No Particular Order

I studied music as a kid and more intensively in college, and I can play (at varying levels) drums, guitar, piano, and mbira.

I once started a line of organic clothing and built an international supply chain. I had no clue what I was doing, but I had fun figuring it out.

I think if everyone read and practiced the advice in How to Win Friends and Influence People, we’d all be 1000% happier.

I’ve taught gardening and nutrition to kids in two countries. Both should be required education in schools (along with personal finance).

I can generally make something yummy out of whatever’s around the kitchen, and I ❤️  my Vitamix.

I discovered my ability to coalesce others’ ideas while managing the curriculum overhaul of a multi-million-dollar business training program.

Wearing shoes in the house is gross. I’ve been called anal. I don’t care.

Always empathic, becoming a massage therapist and then personal development coach taught me how to uncover the emotional root of people’s challenges and desires. (No I won’t give you a massage.)

I’m a certified qigong instructor. I can stay very still for long periods of time. But like Drax the Destroyer, I don’t become invisible. Yet.

Let’s change the friggin’ world!
